Twitter – Another Piece of the Church Communication Puzzle?
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008
Yes. I Twitter. But I’m not one of those Tweeters (seriously, that’s what people who use it are called) who Tweet (sending a message) about doing #2 or use it to replace real human connection. So don’t make too much fun of me. So far it has net me a few web jobs, some interesting conversations, and kept me informed about parties and Bible studies. Pretty useful.
Well yesterday I went ahead and created an account for our church. I have nothing to use it for right now but I wanted to secure the username “sscc”. From what I can tell our church has about 15 Tweeters and it’s probably on the rise due to Elevate, one of our ministries, evangelizing it as a major communication tool – and it has been working.
So my question to you guys…
If your church were to start Twittering, what would you love/hate to see Tweeted?
I plan on sending out “new e-bulletin is online” and “join us at today’s baptism” type stuff but I want o get your input on other info. Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think. Thanks guys!
If you do Twitter, my page is at http://twitter.com/chrismoncus.

Chris,
Yeah – some of the real power I’ve seen on twitter has been an ability to enhance connections you’ve made with people else where. I love to see more people from my church twitter about their everyday lives and then you start to get a picture of what their life is like between Sundays.
You can only call so many people during the week.
You can only hang out with a limited number of people during the week.
But you can stay connected through twitter with a large number of people.

Good comment Billy. I know @thetoneguru / thetoneguru.com has made it his mission to get all of the @elevate_ssi people on Twitter so he can keep up with them for the same reasons you mentioned.

Chris – this is a good question and one that I’ve been contemplating as well. I think Twitter for a church would be a great way to just give some nice quick, short announcements. I’d make sure to have a feed section on your church’s website as well for the folks who don’t follow the actually Twitter feed.
One thing you might do also, if you haven’t already, is check out Twitter Local. You can see local people who are tweeting. I’ve had lunch with a guy already after connecting this way. Not too many people tweeting in our area yet, but I’m thinking it will probably grow.

Chris,
I think quick announcements, updates, maybe some emergency or urgent (but not private) prayer requests, for sure.
And another great usage would be feedback … to send a tweet saying “so, what did God show you as we worshiped this week” … see the responses (in 140 chars or less, haha)
