Love Perversion
Monday, August 18th, 2008
I was reminded tonight after watching the NOOMA video Flame of a simple yet horribly devastating way darkness makes way into our lives. After the video we got into the discussion questions in the back of the book. I forget the exact question but it related to saying “I love my wife” in one sentence and “I love tacos” in the next. The meaning of the word “love” has gotten desperately lost.
I recounted to the group something that was said to me as a high schooler some years ago – “The devil doesn’t work in opposites as much as he works in perversions”. In reference to love it seems that darkness has perverted our view by watering down the meaning. It’s not a question of love and hate. We all know not to hate. Images of the KKK and Hitler come to mind. Rather, it’s a question of real love versus real liking. It’s easy to say “I love tacos” just to mean that they are one of my favorite foods. But when I say “I love Amanda” does she ever wonder if I mean it like tacos? I doubt she does, by the way. I want to be sure that I say “love” when I mean “love” and “like” when I mean “like”. I never want my love to be questioned over semantics.
Look for areas where darkness could creep in through perversions and cut it off. We must not “give the devil a foothold.”
It’s not love versus hate. It’s love loosing its meaning or lust where darkness creeps in.
It’s not driving versus not driving. It’s speeding where darkness creeps in.
It’s not rich or poor. Its greed where darkness creeps in.
May you find who you love and mean “love” when you speak it.

Yeah, I told Jay last night, “I love you with a word stronger than that of my love for tacos”.
