God is Not a Just God

I want to let you in on a secret. God is not a “just” God. He’s more than that. Let me explain.

I hear so often in prayer the word “just”. 

Just.

Just?

What does that mean when one asks God to “just” do something. Is it a sign of a small faith? Do we somehow think that God only wants to do a little bit in our lives? If we have a big faith let’s pray big prayers. Try this. 

Consciously think of what you’re saying while praying. Consider every word. Does each truly reflect your faith? Do we say “Lord, just help him to get well” when what our heart’s desire is “Lord, I’m desperate. Work a miracle. Please heal him fully and let your name be glorified in that hospital!”? Two prayers so alike but so different.

Paul makes it especially clear in Ephesians 3:14-21

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

That’s a big prayer. 

After his prayer he refers to God as “him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine”. That doesn’t sound like a “just” God to me. That sounds like a God who loves us. That sounds like a God who wants to do BIG things in our lives. We can’t understand what He wants to do in our lives. Paul prayed for power and for them to understand love. 

When we pray “Lord, just be with him in his need” do we really mean “Lord, he needs your power in his life. He doesn’t understand how much You love him. Show him how much You care for him. He needs You.” 

Would you start praying big… praying for more than you can imagine?

I started praying big for SSCC. I see my prayers being answered. 

He isn’t a “just” God. He’s a “more” God. Take Him up on it. I promise you He won’t let you down.
