Follow - Fusion Fall RetreatTomorrow’s gonna be a busy day.

Stink. It is tomorrow.

Today’s gonna be a tired and busy day as I get ready for the Fusion Fall Retreat that starts today. The fall retreat is a weekend where 250 or so youth from the Golden Isles get together for a mini youth camp of sorts. It’s full of music, fun, teaching, games, and food. Last year was amazing and from what I’ve heard from the other youth leaders participating… it’s gonna blow last year away.

I’m on assignment again this year as the event photographer. It’s gonna be a blast getting to hang out with all these amazing kids and their leaders for a weekend. They are an inspiration in their walks with God as they seek Him out and try to get to know Him better. I wish us adults had a couple retreats a year to get away like this.

Leading worship this year is Unnamed Servant, who I’ve never seen before but their CD is great. And the speaker I hear is going to be great also but 3am doesn’t allow for me to remember his name. I’ll fill that gap in during future updates.

Pictures will be up soon as well.

So you guys have a wonderful weekend and pray for us. Some kids’ live are gonna get rocked! Yeah!

Elevate Message - Colossians 4:2-18 - November 6, 2007

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Last year I got to give a message at Elevate, our young adult ministry at SSCC. I finished up a series through Colossians that Jay and Corey started. Being that I get to speak about twice a year I felt rusty and said “um” a few hundred times. And I also laughed at my own jokes. Lame. Oh well.

If any of you have some constructive criticism, please leave it in the comments below.

Hopefully this will bless whoever listens to it. You can listen here or download the MP3.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Download the message on Colossians 4:2-18

Look up the verses

Colossians 4:2-18 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

2 Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us that God may open a door to us for the message, to speak the mystery of the Messiah —for which I am in prison — 4 so that I may reveal it as I am required to speak. 5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the time. 6 Your speech should always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.

7 Tychicus, a loved brother, a faithful servant, and a fellow slave in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know how we are, and so that he may encourage your hearts. 9 He is with Onesimus, a faithful and loved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you about everything here.

10 Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, greets you, as does Mark, Barnabas ‘ cousin (concerning whom you have received instructions: if he comes to you, welcome him), 11 and so does Jesus who is called Justus. These alone of the circumcision are my co-workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. 12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a slave of Christ Jesus, greets you. He is always contending for you in his prayers, so that you can stand mature and fully assured in everything God wills. 13 For I testify about him that he works hard for you, for those in Laodicea, and for those in Hierapolis. 14 Luke, the loved physician, and Demas greet you. 15 Give my greetings to the brothers in Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house. 16 And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea. 17 And tell Archippus, “Pay attention to the ministry you have received in the Lord, so that you can accomplish it.”

18 This greeting is in my own hand—Paul. Remember my imprisonment. Grace be with you.

Rick Warren on Church Discipleship and Growth

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Here is one of the most practical and view-altering videos I’ve seen on church growth. Rick Warren is being interviewed regarding church discipleship and growth and his response to the Reveal Study by Willow Creek. It’s about 30 minutes long and well worth it.

I’m Praying Big

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

I’m praying big. Real big.

I want too many people at St. Simons Community Church.

Here’s the deal. SSCC started in a home ten years ago. Since then growing out of buildings has been a trend. God is moving. The leadership is listening. We think we’ve done a decent job at following God and He seems to be blessing. We are now at almost 2000 people a Sunday coming through our doors. That’s several hundred more than we had six months ago. In January we were still meeting in a shopping center in what used to be a dentist’s office. At that time we had three main services - two of which were usually full and required an overflow room. In our new building we are at two services. Both are at 75% capacity and growing.

Here’s my prayer. “God, give us a need for three services“.

When we can handle His will by ourselves … we most likely aren’t in His will.

It’s not a popular prayer to those who just want to play church. It’s not a popular prayer among some who serve on Sundays. It’s very popular among those who wanna see the church and the Kingdom grow. If God answers it then more work is required. One less service seems easier. Less commitment. Check it off our list. More services would be harder and more time consuming. Trust me, it wouldn’t be fun to add another hour and a half to our Sundays.

The good thing is God never intends for us to handle His will by ourselves. 1 Corinthians says we labor WITH God. When we can handle His will by ourselves I dare to suggest we most likely aren’t in His will. He has no reason to be strong when we are handling it ourselves. We don’t need God to run our church if we are doing fine without Him. I pray we never become that church.

I want problems we can’t handle. I want issues we can’t solve. I want to see SSCC to trust and rely on God fully. I want us to be testimonies of God’s power.

I’m ready for the honeymoon to be over. I’m ready for our staff meetings to include statements like “we’re gonna need a third service by the fall”. We do have other options such as overflow into our student’s room but I pray for growth there too. I want to see God move among our people and be strong among us. I want to see Him create and solve our problems. I want to see GOD at SSCC.

Who knows how this will pan out. Who knows how long it will be until God takes us to those new lands - new and scary lands. It may include a Saturday night service. It may include a Sunday night service. We may even launch a satellite campus one day. God will take care of the details for us.

Pray with me that God would move at SSCC. Pray that we would listen to and follow God as He takes us along this journey. Pray for our selfishness to fade. Pray for our hearts as the staff - that we would unite as one to work WITH God and not against Him.

Are you praying big with me?

Two Weeks Notice

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

It’s amazing what two weeks will do. You see staff meeting used to kill me. I work at a church which should be so interesting and fun but I can’t pay attention for two hours to stuff that doesn’t concern me. Not that I don’t care about children’s ministry volunteers and the like - it just doesn’t interest me for that long. Then something happened, staff meetings became staff worship times. I was glad. But it was hard to focus because I couldn’t help but remember all the things that I could be doing to get ready for Sunday. I was torn. Eventually I lightened up and became free to worship after a few weeks. Then prayer became a bigger part of staff meetings. We were singing, praying, and discussing the overall direction of the church. We moved the individual ministries’ discussions to other times so we could focus. Oddly, I actually liked staff meetings. I eventually quit calling staff meetings “staff infection”. I looked forward to every other Tuesday.

We believed the lie that serving God can replace knowing Him

Fast forward to two weeks ago when our pastor, after a week in prayer up at IHOP in KC, comes back broken and changed. He confessed that he as a leader hadn’t led us as a staff to seek God first, then do ministry second. When your church is getting so big and then moving into a brand new facility while still trying to keep up with making sure Sunday happens, it’s easy to forget the relationship for the sake of the ministry. We all had done it in some way. Many of us, as a staff, unknowingly believed the lie that serving God can replace knowing Him.

During that staff meeting we read the Bible. We talked about seeking God FIRST. We talked about the One Thing… God. It was the best staff meeting yet. We spent an hour and a half talking and praying and reading Scripture. Then David dropped the bomb.

For two weeks, our first hour at work was to be spent seeking God. No discussion. We were to shut our door and pray, read, sing, whatever. He realized that we as a staff could not serve God unless our relationship with Him was in order. He wanted us to give God the first fruits of our time. It’s been amazing.

In those two weeks I prayed more than I had in years. I read more of the Bible than I had in years. I got to be in God’s presence each morning for a solid hour. It has changed my life.

When we met again for staff meeting after those two weeks we were all thinking the same thing but someone piped up and asked it, “Can we keep doing it?” So we are.

Our stress level is down. I seem to be getting more done in less time. I feel at peace. I’m just randomly talking to God. Scriptures are coming to mind more frequently in situations where I need them. Praise Jesus.

My pastor told us to work less so we can seek God more. Where else can you find that? We’re blessed, lucky, whatever. Praise God for the leadership He’s put in place.

So I encourage you, if this testimony get to your heart at all, spend an hour with God each day. It will change you. Of you want those Scriptures David gave to us they are:

  • Psalm 27:4
  • Luke 10:41-42
  • Philippians 3:13-14
  • Isaiah 64:4-5
  • Matthew 6:6
  • Matthew 6:33
  • Hebrews 11:6

In my time of prayer I chose to put on some background music and it tended to help me tune out distractions outside my door. The two albums I listened to were The Mix Up by The Beastie Boys (iTunes / Amazon) and everything by Explosions in the Sky (iTunes / Amazon).

Friends, go after the One Thing.
